ENGR. BABAGANA MOHAMMED BECOMES THE 32ND PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS

Engr. Babagana Mohammed, Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, a past chairman of the V.I branch of the Society, was in a glorious assembly in Abuja on the 11th of January 2020 sworn in as the 32nd President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.


The Borno born intelligent engineer in his acceptance speech laid emphasis on building the country on different fronts saying "we will align ourselves with the national development goals 2030 and ensure the profession of engineering gives its best to national development. The widely experienced engineer also said the Nigerian Society of Engineers will open its doors to innovation from all and sundry. Individuals with outstanding ideas that can move the nation forward will get support from the society whether or not such individuals are engineers. To him, what matters now to the society is the greater good of the nation.


He further stressed on the importance of young engineering graduates getting necessary help to be able to create jobs by equipping them with skills relevant in the 21st century. He opined that a young engineering graduate should be a job creator either for others or at least himself.


He emphasized that the world is moving away from the era of certificate based employment to skills based employment thereby calling for urgent moves in equipping young people with skills.




The new vibrant president concluded by proposing ways of strengthening the society, increasing its membership, mentoring young engineers and nurturing them, settling conflicts within the engineering family from different regions of the country, and many other important issues were touched by him. He concluded by appraising the efforts of the Borno state governor in promoting engineering, development and efficiency in the state.


In attendance in the history making event are the Executive Governor of Borno Engr. Prof Babagana Zulum who came with members of his cabinet most of whom are engineers, Executive Governor of Yobe, Hon. Mai Buni,  immediate past governor of Borno state currently serving as a member of the National Assembly, Sen. Kashim Shettima, President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, past presidents of the society, fellows and important personalities both from within and outside the engineering ecosystem were all in attendance.

Also gracing the occasion are Royal Fathers from  Bauchi and Borno who sent representatives, The Mai Bade of Borno Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman in person, full entourage of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria led by founders of the associations, immediate past president Engr. Dr. Felicia Agubata, FNSE, current president Engr. Funmilola Ojelade, FNSE and other members of the executives. Branch Chairmen of the Nigerian Society of Engineers from all 37 states and outside the country were also in attendance. Representatives of National Engineering & Technical Company Limited (NETCO) were at the event led by senior members of staff of the apex company.

The dignitaries took turns to give reassurance on the competence of Engr. Babagana Mohammed, FNSE in their remarks expressing their confidence in him and encouraging him to do as he has said he'll do in his acceptance speech.

The outgoing president, Engr. Olumuyiwa Mokuolu, Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers also took time to encourage the new president in upholding the ideals of the Society and ensuring that he gives his best to taking the Society to a greater height. He however advised him to set off immediately and gnore any  form of distraction especially from people who have nothing good to offer the society.

The chairperson of the investiture planning committee Engr. Aishatu Umar, FNSE who doubles as the President of Nigeria Institute of Civil Engineers in her welcome address acknowledged the person of the new president Engr. Babagana Mohammed, FNSE, his clear intentions and drive to moving the society forward.

After all said and done, its clear like the handwriting on the wall that Engr. Babagana Mohammed is exactly what the entire enginering community needs at this time when Nigeria needs to double its efforts in building the nation.

The entire team of the number one engineering media outfit in Nigeria led by Engr. Festus Alawode, FNIEEE was on ground to detail the event. We congratulate the new president and wish him the very best in his 2 years reign.
